Changed my mind...

Or at least have decided what I want to write about. Graphology.. which is:

Graphology is the study of handwriting and handwriting analysis. It is a well known and accepted technique when it comes to the assessment of people in an organization. A persons handwriting is a clear indicator of a persons personality and behaviour. Handwriting or ‘brainwriting‘ is obviously strongly influenced by a persons brain, since it is the brain which sends the signals to the mussels, to make a person able to actually write something. This is part of the reason we can see such uniquely personal and individual features in a persons handwriting, but since we are taught how to write different taught features will also shine through. The context of the written script is not important when it comes to handwriting analysis.

This is an interresting topic and I have now narrowed the handwriting topic down! I am going to look into the technique and some other aspects of graphology.

ESSAY PLAN . . .

I think handwriting is an interesting topic to write about. It is very interesting how our attitude towards handwriting changes completely with the different aspects of handwriting.

How can handwriting be the most appropriate to use in one situation, but in an other situation it will be the total opposite? This is one of the many questions that comes to my mind when I start thinking about it.

How do we feel differently when we receive a personal text, email or letter?

Do we change our handwriting to different situations?

Will we in the end just type and use digital devices, or will we keep our handwriting?

There is so much i could talk about and speculate around when it comes to handwriting. I realize that I have to narrow it down to a smaller part of the subject . . .

But I need some help to choose!

Should I write about the different form of handwriting in a personal letter versus a formal letter? How it feels more sincere and truthful in one situation, but in the other it is completely wrong. Why is this?

Or maybe I can write about how handwriting is starting to “disappear”, with the use of digital devices, when do we ever use handwriting anymore? And do we really need to? Can we actually live a life without handwriting? But then again, how much more don’t you appreciate a hand written letter or an old fashion post card?

What does handwriting tell us versus text composed on a computer or other digital devices? How much does exactly the tone of voice change? Does it make a difference if you get a birthday wish on your facebook wall or as a handwritten card? But how much do we actually care anymore? Is it part of our life style?

And the again, what about the different styles of handwriting? How we change our handwriting and adopt new techniques and styles . . . Is that ever going to change? And how come we change our handwriting? Is it the same with boys, or is it a girly thing?

There is definitely many aspects of this topic. And I find some of them more interesting than others, but at the same time they also link in a way. I think I want to try and make sense around the whole handwriting versus computer written topic. It is very interesting how things change and how we adapt to new technologies, but at the same time we are a bit scared to let completely go of the old, safe and familiar. Even if we love trying new things and “can’t” live without our new fancy devices. The things we find safe and trust will always be the best though, and what can you trust more than your own handwriting?

Handwriting vs. computer...

I have been thinking about how you trust handwritten documents versus computer written documents, and I think it depends on the context. If you are to sign a contract, I would trust a computer written one more than a handwritten. Which in a way is strange if the words are exactly the same.. But I think it has to do with the fact that a contract made on a computer looks a lot more professional, which again makes it a lot more trustworthy, because we all trust the professional. But then again, a written and signed contract is a written and signed contract!

What is it that makes us trust something more when it is made by a computer? Does it make the words more real? But then again, what is more real than someones handwriting?

Just something to think a bit more about . . .

Trends in type?

After the lecture today, I started thinking about something.. Do we have different trends when it comes to handwriting? When I was still in school, I remember how all the girls (me included) used to change our handwriting almost every week. Everyone wanted to be able to write with exactly the same handwriting as their friend. I think this is a girly thing, but it has resulted in me having several different styles of handwriting, which I still change from time to time...

What do you think?

Good evening!

So, this is my first blog post ... ever! The main use for this blog is going to be commenting on different typography and my thoughts around it. It will also work as a "diary" where I analyze typography from different places, areas etc. for an essay.

The other day, I saw this label on a wine bottle, and it did catch my eye. I think it is interesting how the name Ravelli is in a grid and that you can see how the font is constructed. In other circumstances, the fact that you can see the body of a construction may make it look unfinished in a way. But in this case I feel that it actually makes the name special. You feel like you are part of the making in a way. What do you think?
